Seems a bit dramatic !
Its not, if we fail to pass on our skills places like this will not be appreciated by future generations. The knowledge of the skills involved in construction a building like this will be forgotten and lost for ever.
Looking to the immediate future keeping competitive is essential, knowing the latest technologies and materials is essential. With that comes knowing how to best use them to your advantage. . . . . . . TRAINING YOUR STAFF
Some people keep saying “its common sense” I strongly disagree.
Humans have a multitude of senses, five main ones, in order to understand what we see, hear, smell, feel & taste we have to be taught. From the day of our conception we are learning, when we are born our parents teach us what is good, bad, hot cold, painful or tastes bad. When we are all grown up it doesn't stop there, we have to keep learning as we face new experiences.
Thats all simple for every day life, which some dont get through, some cope better than others as we well know.
In the work place our five senses can only help so much, the rest is down to Training, Teaching and Learning. In our life we usually figure out the physical dangers, falling, getting run over, muscle strains, getting cut etc. and most of us learn to avoid them. The hazards of using plant tools and machinery is best learned form professionals as finding out the hard way may be unfortunately terminal.
The use of technology in or work place falls way outside the capability of our senses, we can’t (in most cases) see electricity in a cable, we can't see a magnetic field we have to be taught about its presence and effects. We supplement our senses by instruments which we use to detect and measure the presence of such forces.
A further example of this is cable technology, its used in our industry to connect and transfer power and data, it comes in all shapes and sizes for a reason. The explanation may be simple or very complicated but basically the reason for its construction and intended usage has to be learned, you cannot guess it by touch alone. You dont need to known the maths behind how its designed of what polymers are used in its insulation. What is essential is knowing what the manufacturer publishes about it, not just reading the words but understanding how this applies to you. This cannot be guessed, its taught.
What we are taught and what we have learned are what we use as “common sense” without proper training we are a liability to ourselves and others.
So next time your manager shouts “have you no common sense !” perhaps they should have said “you are laking in training”
Topics we can teach . . . .
Basic electrical theory: for those involved in commissioning and maintenance its essential to have a basic knowledge of the principals of electrical technology.
Usage of test instruments: standard electrical test and use of specialised audio related testers
Interpretation of test results: how to read and make sense of the results. Use of data for maintenance, fault finding and setup
Cable technology: types of cables used, which ones can be used for a specific purpose. How cables interact and possible problems. How to avoid potential cable issues
Specialised knowledge related to sound system installation, rules on sound system design, installation and maintenance
Safety regarding use of high power sound systems, how loud sounds can cause you and others harm
Sound systems used Life safety in conjunction with Fire Detection systems: Interpretation of current standards in the design, install and maintenance. How best to comply with your customers specification
